Mandalas

The word ‘mandala’ comes from the Sanskrit word ‘mandalam’, which means circle. In Hinduism and Buddhism these circular geometric artworks are often used as meditation aids or to depict an aspect of the higher realms or greater cosmic patterns.

These coloured mandalas are done with watercolour and metal leaf over a giclee print of the original pen and ink drawing. Limited edition colour prints are available for order.

HARVEST MOON WATERCOLOUR
Angie Bell, owner and colour alchemist behind Harvest Moon Watercolours, single handedly makes each paint from her home just outside of Cape Town. Her paints look akin to powdered beetles and butterfly wings, and yet they are 100% vegan and ethically sourced. They are a product of genuine love and passion – a quality tangibly felt within every colour. Each of my paintings are done on Fabriano watercolour paper that has been carefully prepared in alignment with the ancient miniature painting tradition. The first few layers of painting are done with regular watercolours after which the pearlescent pigments are applied. These create the luminous and iridescent quality in each finished piece. Owing to the colour shifting nature of these pigments, throughout the painting process the artwork needs to be regularly held up to the light and checked as sometimes the paint is only visible from certain angles. It has been the greatest joy and honour to represent this brand – not only has it broadened my awareness of the iridescent landscape that weaves itself throughout nature, but has also led to a very special friendship Angie. There is something about painting with colours that have been created by loving hands and small batches that adds a unique dimension to the overall creative experience.
